INSPIRATION
It’s early February and I am still in my winter cooking mode which means lots of soup and chili recipes are on my menu. I have a double layered bowl cozy that I made a few years ago that I use ALL THE TIME. I love it, especially for heating up leftovers, and I knew I wanted to share this bowl cozy pattern on the blog with all of you. The double layer really does protect your hands from heat and the cozy can be used in the microwave so your hands never have to touch a scolding hot bowl. Not only do these bowl cozies project from heat, but I love to use them with especially cold bowls too. I always use my cozy when I’m enjoying a bowl of ice cream or my cold cereal. What could be better than a double-purpose crochet project?!
GIFT IDEA
These bowl cozies make the perfect gift for busy families (make a cozy for each person), new home owners, new parents, and I especially like to gift them for bridal showers. I make a his and her set of cozies and pair them with a homemade soup mix in a jar, I include the recipe, the canned ingredients, a kitchen towel and a cookbook. Such a fun and practical gift to give! I’ve included below my two favorite cookbooks for giving and they are both reasonably priced. Yay!

BOWL COZY USE & CARE INSTRUCTIONS
REGULAR USE – Place your bowl inside the cozy and then ladle the hot food into the bowl.
MICROWAVE – If you plan to use your bowl cozies in the microwave I highly recommend using 100% Cotton Yarn ONLY. It is much safer to use than acrylic.
Place your bowl of food inside the cozy and microwave (high is fine), stirring at 1 minute intervals. I recommend not using the cozy for more than 3 minutes in the microwave.
CARE – Spot clean the cozy with mild soup and water and let air dry.
RECIPE - Texas 2-Step Soup Mix in a Jar
I made bowl cozies for Christmas gifts a few years ago and included a jar of this soup mix with the cozies. I received rave reviews about the soup so I tried it myself. YUM!!

Round 8 (outside layer only) – ch 1, sc 2 in same ch 1 sp, sc 1 in each st around, do not sc 1 in beginning sp, slp st (58) – tie off and weave in tail
Weave in beginning magic ring tails of both cozies
With wrong sides together, tuck 2nd inside layer into the outside layer working it and molding it down into the outer layer until both layers fit evenly together and the last round of stitching of each layer lines up (see photos below).
**COLOR CHANGE to YARN 2** – (yarn color of your choice)
For my yellow cozy I used OVERCAST TWISTS for my YARN 2
For my black, multi-colored cozy I used BAMBOO for my YARN 2
Choose a beginning spot and pull the new Yarn 2 color through both lined up sts from each cozy layer (see photos below)
Round 9 – sc 1 in each set of sts around, slp st (58) – (see photos below)
Round 10 – 12 – ch 1, sc 1 in each st around, slp st (58)
Round 13 – ch 1, sc 1 in the next 3 sts, *hdc 2 in the next st, dc 2 in the next 4 sts, hdc 2 in the next, sc 1 in the next 2 sts* – repeat around x 5 (see photos below)
Round 14 – hdc 2 in the next st, dc 2 in the next 4 sts, hdc 2 in the next, sc 1 in the last st of the round, sl st (100)
Round 15 – ch 1, sc 1 in each st around, sl st (100)
Tie off and weave in Yarn 2 tails
EMBELLISHMENT STITCHING (Optional)
This embellishment stitching is totally optional and the cozy looks great with or without it.
Cut a 90″L piece of the Yarn 2 color, then thread your needle with the yarn. Coming from the inside of the cozy out through the front side, insert the needle in the space just below the Yarn 1 sc stitch (left photo).
Move your needle up one stitch over to the right and insert the needle from the front side through to the inside of the cozy in the space just above the Yarn 1 sc stitch (right photo).
Repeat this embellishment stitching all the way around the cozy (see photos below).
Tie off and weave in tails.
Finished embellishment stitching on the outside of the cozy (left photo) and the inside of the cozy (right photo).
HANGING LOOP (Optional)
I like to add a hanging loop to my cozies so I can fold them in half and hang them with my potholders.
To make the hanging loop start at the last tie off space of the cozy. Insert your hook and pull through your Yarn 2 color (left photo).
Chain 10 (right photo).
Move your hook 3 spaces to the left and insert your hook in that 3rd space, sl st (left photo).
Tie off and weave in tails
These Crochet Double Layered Bowl Cozies are truly great protection from heat or cold. Make a set or two. Your hands will THANK YOU!

December 26, 2021 at 1:03 amOn the bowl cozy, rnd 14 shouldn’t there be a repeat? If I crochet it as written I end up with 12 stitches not 100 & the scallops are off and not centered with rnd 13.
Sorry, I haven’t crocheted a lot recently and this rnd seems “off”.
