INSPIRATION

During the holiday season last year I posted the pattern for my Crochet Hat & Scarf Jar Cozies (see link below) and was inspired to make a new version, deciding on a Santa sweater. I love the simplicity of this pattern and how this sweater-like jar cozy makes for such a fun, festive and unique gift, your gift jars will be a gift-giving hit!

If you prefer a jar lid topper, try using the hat pattern below and make a red Santa hat with a white rim and pom pom on top.

COCOA BAR IDEA

I used a smaller jar and filled it with candy canes then added a Santa sweater cozy.  I plan to include this at my cocoa bar this holiday season!

GIFT IDEA

For a cute teacher gift, I bought a pair of fuzzy socks, a Starbucks gift card and a bag of mini Snickers.  Once I filled the jar I added a Santa sweater cozy and fun holiday picks.  SO CUTE!!  This gift would be fun for friends, neighbors, co-workers too, etc.

SANTA SWEATER COZY FRINGE

With NEW YORK WHITE yarn

Cut 50 – 6″ strands of yarn

Thread your needle with the first strand of cut yarn.

Starting at the right side of the cozy, insert your threaded needle through to the backside of the bottom corner (left photo), and pull about half of the yarn through.

Turn your threaded needle around and go back through the same space you first inserted the needle (middle photo).

Pull the yarn down through the corner leaving just enough yarn to form a loop (right photo).

Insert your finger and thumb just inside the yarn loop and pinch the two strands together (left photo).

Pull the two strands all the way through the loop (middle photo).

Pull the end of each strand to tighten and secure it to the cozy (right photo).

Continue attaching strands up the right side edge until 8 strands have been attached (left photo).

You will now attach the remaining 42 strands across the top of the cozy.  Attach your first strand of the 42 in the same corner you attached the last of the 8 side strands to (middle photo).

Continue attaching strands across the top of the cozy (right photo) until all 48 strands have been attached.

Once you have attached all 42 strands across the top of the cozy you should have 3 empty stitches (left photo).  This section is where the cozy will overlap and it doesn’t need fringe.

To trim the fringe measure about 1″ out from where the white knot is butted up to the red (middle photo).

Trim at the 1″ mark up the side of the cozy and all the way across the top (right photo).

To fray the strands use your nail or end of your needle to separate each thread per strand.  With the yarn I used I had 6 separate threads per strand (left photo).

Repeat until all of the strands have been frayed (right photo).

ATTACHING EACH END OF THE COZY TOGETHER

Wrap the cozy around your jar and hold the right side in place with your thumb (left photo).

Bring the left side of the cozy around, overlapping the right side (middle photo).  As you are wrapping the left side around, pull the cozy so it is nice and snug around the jar.  This will keep the cozy from slipping once it’s on the jar.

Keeping the cozy snug to the jar, safety pin the two ends together (right photo).

With the safety pin still in place, thread your needle with the red yarn that you used for the cozy and stitch down each corner (right photo).

ATTTACHING JINGLE BELLS AROUND THE COZY

From the side edge of the cozy move over to the left 2 black double crochet stitches.  Bring your threaded needle from the backside of the cozy through to the frontside and thread a bell (left photo).  Pull your knotted yarn all the way through the bell and then back down through the backside.

Weave your needle through the next 3 backside stitches (middle photo).

Push your need through to the frontside and string your next bell leaving 3 black double crochet stitches between each bell (right photo).

Continue to string bells until you have 9 single bells sewn all the way around the cozy.

Santa Claus is coming to town and he’s wearing these cute Santa Sweater Jar Cozies.  Dress up your holidays (and jars) with a touch of this Jolly old guy and he’s sure to put you on the nice list! 🎅
